Only Prepper in my area
I hope I’m wrong, but seemingly all my neighbors are the most “situation white” oblivious folks you could find. I’ve always fantasized/hoped about finding aware alert neighbors who were interested in forming “sleeper cells” for our local security. This is why I’m really digging the Survive In Place training. I feel that there must be sheepdogs in sheeps clothing amongst us. Much like the minutemen in early times. I’m the only guy I’ve seen in the whole neighborhood with a garden. No one has a clue about the food/water/supplies I have stored, but they would figure it out real quick if things got desperate.
I would be so relieved to find others in my area who were like minded and especially one who was qualified to be a commander. I am 56 years young, xxxxxxxxxxxx, and never was the warrior type anyway. But, if I’m all we got then I’ll do the job till someone better comes along. I was in the Air Force in the early 70’s (last part of Viet Nam) but never saw combat, never even went there.
I’ve learned some fundamentals in my time, but like I say, I’m far from being a real soldier.
I see wonderful families with children all around me with good American fathers/men that need to be directed if chaos of whatever type or level broke out. I suppose you could say 9/11 woke me up to the need. Those NY’ers came together like true Americans when all hell was breaking loose and I feel that some, maybe most, Texans could do the same if ever need be.
Lately I hear in the news where the CIA thwarted an attack by selling phony anthrax to terrorists trying to use a known dope smuggling tunnel on the Texas Mexico border to get it through. What if terrorists are successful in the future? What if the Houston ship channel is hit by another Ike or Katrina (or God forbid, a nuke on a trojan horse ship) and most supplies and fuel would be cut off for who knows how long? Gihad is real and we should take it seriously. Gov’t is trying to assimilate us into some Euro style powerless constituanc, control free enterprise and demonize the dollar. With all this at hand, sooner or later there is bound to be trouble.
The common citizen is probably going to remain oblivious to all these things. Dancing with the Stars and Whataburger is just so much more fun to deal with. I just pray for a few more like minded people in my community who feel responsible for our own welfare/safety and can become a team of “warriors in my pack”. When I say “warrior” I mean a warrior against chaos, defeat and loss. Against, fear, stupidity and apathy.
A warrior for preparedness. Remember the first boy scout motto? Be Prepared.
…Or am I just a crazy guy on a rant here?…
[David’s reply: No…you’re not crazy at all. There is an oft mis-quoted saying “Jack of all trades, master of none.” It’s actually, “Jack of all trades, master of ONE.” The point is that if someone specializes and delegates everything other than their one particular area where they are an expert, they’ll accomplish great things, but they’re as stable as an inverted pyramid. It sounds like your neighborhood, like most neighborhoods, is made up primarily of people who have chosen this path.
On the other hand, the Jack of all, master of one is still an expert in one field, but understands the need for a broad range of skills. He is like a pyramid with a stable base. Most of his time will be spent on his expertise, but he’ll be continually learning things outside of his specialty. This process of learning continually challenges the mind and creates a person who can think on their feet and react to adversity. It sounds like you fit in this catagory and I applaud you for it. It’s a rare trait…and we need a LOT more people like you.
Robert Heinlein (Starship Troopers) has a GREAT quote on this: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, con a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, deliver a baby, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”]
